Welcome to our combined May & June edition of In and Around going on in the area, restaurants to try, presents to buy…
Our front cover features some of the ‘cast’ of a restaurant that is already well known in Battersea but still fairly new to the streets of Covent Garden. It is the wonderful and slightly crazy Bunga Bunga; a mafioso styled restaurant and cabaret club which is definitely not for the faint hearted. But if you are a bit of a party animal this is definitely the place for you. We decided to have a bit of a Bunga Bunga party ourselves last month as you can see from the photos on page 23.
This month we are looking forward to enjoying some summer sunshine at some of our favourite al fresco spots (pages 4-5). What can I say, roll on summer. We are also celebrating all things floral as St Paul’s Church with events partner Randolphs are looking forward to opening up the church garden for some wonderful summer garden parties and, for the first time ever, Covent Garden Market is going to have its very own garden at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. So far we have only seen the artist’s impression but are very excited to see it for real (pages 12-13).
Staying with the outdoor theme our history feature looks back to the beginning of street entertainment in Covent Garden, from cock-fighting to illusionists, card tricksters to wandering minstrels it’s all here, followed by a fun insight into all you ever wanted to know about street entertainers but were afraid to ask by Street Entertainer extraordinaire Tom Balmont (pages 10-11). Another more historic street entertainer, Mr Punch, much enjoyed by Charles Dickens, celebrates his birthday in May with a garden party and festival (page 6).
Last of all don’t forget your lovely dad on Father’s Day (18 June) as we explore the best male grooming and gift ideas in Covent Garden (pages 14-15).
All that’s left to say is have fun in the sun,
